Planet Slayer
I took this test last week out of curiosity for my carbon footprint. I flew home to New Zealand in April to see my family so knew it wouldn’t be good but I was still surprised and to be honest a little shocked.
I like to think I’m pretty environmentally aware. I ride a bike just about everywhere and otherwise take public transport. I live in share housing and always turn off lights and appliances when I’m not using them. I follow a raw food diet so I don’t even cook.
But even so, I used up my greenhouse gas allocation 7 years ago due to that flight alone. Without those flights I would have until 82 but I’ve done a lot of flying.
Global warming is the major challenge facing us all today. I spend a lot of time talking about personal health and how it correlates with the health of our planet but I feel like a hypocrite while my personal footprint this year has been so large. Many of us talking about it are in fact some of the greatest personal culprits.
However what is the value of trying to increase awareness through travel? That is a tough question. For my part I’m going to pay even more attention to the little things I can do each day to lighten my load. I want my kids to be able to enjoy the beauty I have.
