Pregnancy Cravings
One of the great things about working with The LifeCo is that you get access to a lot of experts on healthy living.
Paul Harper is a Naturopath who specializes in exercise and nutrition (and contributes regularly to our blog). Every month he prepares a presentation on a different health topic for people at The LifeCo. A couple months ago he wrote one on healthy pregnancy and raising a healthy child, so of course I’ve been following it.
Some interesting points he makes about fetal nutrition:
- Morning sickness, cravings and aversions are our body’s way of avoiding unhealthy choices
- Cravings for unhealthy foods often are a sign our body needs more nutrients (this is also true if you’re not pregnant)
- Babies learn about flavors through their amniotic fluid, so what we eat while pregnant can affect what our children want to eat later in life
To make sure your baby gets the best nutrition while it’s developing, Paul recommends the following:
- Eat as many whole, raw, living vegetables as possible
- Eat nuts and seeds which are rich in essential fatty acids (for brain development)
- Green leafy veggies provide extra oxygen
- Whole food supplements like chlorella and blue green algae are a rich source of balanced nutrients
- Avoid meat, processed foods, coffee, alcohol, soft drinks, smoking, stress and negativity
